Charlotte's Web impact on society
Charlotte's Web has had a impact on just about every kid in the past two generations. It is possibly one of the most famous children's classic novels. It never won a Newbery Award. Back in 1953 When E.B. White wrote this book I do not think in his greatest dreams he would ever think this book would be in just about every classroom.
Fable
Charlotte's Web is not a novel that you would think of as a standard fable. It is a little unconventional, however it does represent what a fable tries to teach or get across to the reader. Charlotte's Web goes into great symbolism with wisdom and shrewdness. A typical fable, such as Aesop's Fables, have a arching theme that typically points at a specific problem that is occurring with in society at that time.
E.B. White wrote this book after WW2 which as we know it was perhaps the greatest war to ever modernize the world. At this time people started to generate material wealth. The economy was at that time was rising faster than it could go up. Manufacturing was being modernized and the people that worked in these industries that were being improved and developed were making more money. White wanted to show how blind humans can really be, in relationship to money. He takes the anti-materialist theory while writing this fable. Showing the people that there is more to life than just money. In life there are wonders that happen to people all the time, all you need to do is have your eyes open and present in the now. |
Human Connection
E.B. White wants the readers to interpret the connection between and pig and a spider. There are paralls that he draws through his words to relate this to the ongoing struggle that America was going through. This goes against what was happening to the economic boom post WW2. Wilbur is just a pig, he came into this world not knowing anything, not promising anything but his bacon. Wilbur become the extraordinary pig due to Fern's and Charlotte's love toward him. The morale of E.B. Whites Story is friendship and an unconditional love that we should have for people and things. Because everything is special.
